PORTLAND, Ore. – If you’re hitting the road for Thanksgiving this year, expect to see more drivers than last year.

AAA predicts nearly 60 million people will travel 50 miles of more to get to their destinations over the four-day weekend.

That’s 1.6 million more people, or a more-than three percent increase over 2016. It’s the highest number of travelers since 2005.

“A strong economy and labor market are generating rising incomes and higher consumer confidence, fueling a strong year for the travel industry, which will continue into the holiday season,” said Bill Sutherland, AAA senior vice president of travel and publishing.

They also predict this will be the largest year for growth in holiday travel by air. They expect it to increase 5 percent from 2016.

AAA defines the Thanksgiving holiday travel period as Wednesday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 26.
